When he was seven years of age he lost his father. He remained with his mother and assisted her in looking after the younger children, never leaving the old farm until his marriage. Five years later, in 1900, he bought his own farm from the Cross heirs. It was known as the old Grandmother Whan farm and the hewn log house standing there had weathered the storms of 100 years. Mr. McAnlis carried on general farming and kept cows, shipping his milk to Pittsburgh.
He and his wife were members of the United Presbyterian Church. In politics he was affiliated with the Republican party.
