General Notes: Husband - George Eyster

After having obtained a common-school education he entered Pennsylvania College at Gettysburg, graduating from there about the year 1850. On the 12th of April, 1854, he was admitted to the Franklin County bar, and in October, 1860, was elected district attorney of Franklin County. In October, 1854, he became partner and editor of the Transcript, the Know-nothing organ, which in December, 1855, was consolidated with the Repository. He continued a member of the new firm for several years. Early in the beginning of the war Mr. Eyster was appointed provost-marshal for the Southern Pennsylvania District, comprising Fulton, Franklin, Bedford and Somerset Counties. This position he occupied until the office was abolished, and at its discontinuance he took up his practice of law in Chambersburg. In 1868 he was appointed by Gen. Grant to the office of assistant treasurer of the United States at Philadelphia and remained in that capacity until June, 1886, when he was succeeded by S. Davis Page. Mr. Eyster again took up the practice of his profession in Philadelphia, but on account of ill-health could do very little in that line.

He was educated at the Chambersburg Academy, and was graduated at Pennsylvania College, Gettysburg, in 1851. He was admitted to the Franklin County Bar April 12, 1854; was editor of the Repository and Transcript, 1855-56; District Attorney, 1860-63; Provost Marshal, with rank of Captain, 1863-65; and Assistant Treasurer of the United States at Philadelphia, 1869-86. [BAFC, 681]

He was educated at Pennsylvania College, where he graduated in 1852. He studied law and was admitted to practice, serving for a short time as District Attorney of Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He was appointed Provost Marshal of the southern tier of counties of Pennsylvania during the Civil War. At the termination of the war he resumed his law practice until in 1869 when President Grant appointed him Assistant Treasurer of the United States at Philadelphia. This position he held until a short time before his death. Failing health prompted him to seek a milder and more congenial climate and he was on the point of doing so when death suddenly claimed him. He died at the residence of his sister and brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Scott in Philadelphia, about four o'clock in the afternoon of December 29th, 1886.
