General Notes: Husband - James Claude Aiken

He received his education in the public and high schools of his native town, and then attended Allegheny College, but did not stay to complete his course, as an opportunity presented itself for him to make a good beginning in the line of endeavor that he wished to follow, namely engineering. For this purpose he left college, and entered the employ of the Standard Steel Car Company, of Butler, and there he rose from one position to a higher one during a period of fifteen years. At the end of this time, he went to the state of Washington, that great land of promise of the far Northwest, where he became engaged in reclamation work, and he remained there for a period of three years, during which time he gained a broad experience in the line of engineering that stood him in good stead after he began in business for himself. Returning to Butler, he determined to start out in his own venture, and in connection with Mr. Kesselman and Mr. Greenough, he established a firm for engineering work, under the firm name of Aiken, Kesselman & Greenough, these three men having acquired the interest of the Carson Engineering Company, with which Mr. Kesselman had been connected. This firm did a general engineering and contracting business. Some of the important work that they did for the locality included the Sewage Disposal Plant at Elwood City; all the engineering work for the Standard Plate Company, with which firm Mr. Kesselman was also formerly connected; and they made also the plans for a large park in Butler, which included a lake and a dam; besides many more important surveys.
He was a member of the Republican Party in his political connection; he was a member of the Sterling Club of Butler, and his church connection was with the United Presbyterian Church of Butler.
