He was educated in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, and was a farmer all his life. For sixteen years he was also engaged in buying and selling wool. His farm contained 322 acres.
He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian church, of which he was an elder. He was a Republican, and held several township offices.
