His literary education was received in the common schools and Elder's Ridge Academy. A few years before he became of age he entered the store of Robert Johnson, of Armagh, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, as a clerk, and followed this vocation until 1858, when he located in New Florence and engaged in merchandising for himself.
