He attended the public schools and worked on the homestead farm until twenty-one years of age. In 1876 he engaged in the livery business at Harmony, Butler County, Pennsylvania, where he came to enjoy the leading trade of the borough. He and his wife were members of the Church of God. Politically, he was a Republican, and was a member of the Royal Arcanum.
