General Notes: Husband - Thomas A. Courtney


He was educated in the common schools, the Mercer graded schools, and went to the Edinboro Normal, Erie County, for three terms. He taught, in all, twenty-three months in Mercer and Venango Counties, and in Fulton County, Illinois. In 1873 he opened a mercantile store at Balm, Springfield Township, Mercer County, in company with J. A. Painter. Two years later he sold out to Mr. Painter, and in 1875 was elected county auditor, and served two terms. He then resided on his farm until 1887, when he was employed as manager of the Mercer Woodenware Works.
