General Notes: Husband - Nicholas Graffius

On the 6th of September, 1770, Peter Crafis and Nicholas Crafis entered into an agreement with James Patterson, by which they agreed to purchase from him a tract of 227½ acres of land lying on the south-east side of the Juniata, above the mouth of the Little Juniata, then in Barree township, Cumberland County, later Porter township, Huntingdon County. In the assessment of Barree township for 1774,-
Nicholas Crawphes is charged with 70 acres of land, 1 horse, and 1 cow.

Peter Craff is charged with 70 acres of land, 15 acres improved, 1 horse, and 1 cow.
On the 6th of December, 1778, Mary Patterson conveyed the land by deed to Peter Crafis and Nicholas Crafis. Nicholas Crafish and Elizabeth, his wife, by deed dated Jan. 10, 1785, conveyed his interest in this land to David Musselman, of Lancaster County, and soon thereafter settled on Shaver's Creek. [HHBC, ]

He was not more than a boy when he came to America. When he reached manhood, he married and fixed his residence on the Juniata river, within the present limits of Porter township, Huntingdon County. He had bought 300 acres of land, to which he came in the spring; with split rails he made a sort of pen in which to live during the summer. By the time winter came he had built a small log cabin with clap-boards for a door, holes in the walls for windows, and one in the roof for a chimney. Mr. Graffius cleared his land, and farmed it for eight or ten years. Then, the Indians becoming troublesome, the family was obliged to remove to Maryland. A year later they returned to their primitive homestead in one of the first wagons ever brought into that region. Soon after, Mr. Graffius sold his land in Porter township and bought 240 acres on Shavers Creek, now in West township. On this property he built a small log house which, in the course of a few years, had to give place to a larger one-the last house in which its builder lived. He cleared a great portion of his land, raised stock, besides cultivating it, and was something of a hunter besides. He added a distillery to his other industries. Mr. Graffius was a Whig. [CBEJV, 229]

Besides the children listed, he and his wife had five that died in early childhood.
