General Notes: Husband - Thomas Farnsworth

At the age of nine years he started out to make his own living, as his mother was left a widow with a large family of children. He found employment at packing shingles, which he continued to do until he had reached the age of twelve years, when he began to drive a double team (four oxen) used in drawing logs. By the time he had reached manhood he had passed through all kinds of work connected with lumbering, and finally became a contractor of jobs to clear the timber from the mountain sides. He married and they settled down in a rude, forest home and began life in a primitive manner. By strict economy they accumulated enough money to buy the old homestead, where they settled and continued to carry on the lumber business until 1868. They were then able to purchase the Dunham farm, consisting of 125 acres, which became their residence, although they still owned the homestead property. They remodeled the buildings, constructed new barns, sheds for machinery, stock, etc., and developed a fine valley farm, which was stocked with 15 choice milch cows, 30 head of sheep, five draft horses, and a number of fine stock hogs.
About 1883 a new era of prosperity and good fortune came to them. Oil was discovered on the farm, and eventually 22 producing wells were put down on the premises, several of which he owned, besides being interested in 32 others.
He cast his first vote for James Buchanan for president of the United States, but after that time affiliated with the Republican party. He held office in Cherry Grove township, as school director, supervisor, etc., and in Sheffield township, as school director, town commissioner, and collector. The family were willing workers in the Methodist Church.
He was a member of Warren Lodge, I. O. O. F. His sons were also all members of the I. O. O. F.
