He was reared on a farm, and when fourteen years old went to Venango County, PA, and there engaged in farming and lumbering until he was thirty-six years of age. During the Rebellion he enlisted, September 8, 1862, in Company D, Eighteenth Pennsylvania Cavalry, and was in the battles of Winchester, Cedar Creek, Hagerstown, Falling Water, and many other engagements. After serving three years he was honorably discharged June 12, 1865. In 1868 he settled on the farm where he now resides, in Cambridge township, Crawford County. He and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He served several terms as School Director of his township and one term as Supervisor. In politics he was a Republican. Also he was a F. & A. M. and a member of the G. A. R.
