He attended the common schools, and one term at the Edinboro Normal, also at the Sheakleyville Academy. He and his wife settled on the farm of M. E. Pauley, in Otter Creek Township, Mercer County, PA, which they rented from him in the opening of 1883. During the winter months he was engaged in teaching school. He was a Democrat, and was auditor and assessor three years each, and assistant assessor one year.
