He was a manufacturer of woolen goods in Leeds, England and a member of the Established Church - and a man whose advanced ideas brought him into strong sympathy with the Colonies in the Revolutionary struggle. His four sons all came to America while young men, the eldest two, John and Samuel, arriving in 1792.
