General Notes: Husband - John Cope

He purchased 200 acres in Bradford, Chester County, Pennsylvania, in 1712, and erected a log house thereon, in which his children were born.

Some time after his second marriage he joined with Friends, and he and John Buffington were appointed, November 6, 1732-3, to have oversight of burials at Bradford Meeting, which is his first appearance on the records.

In 1761-63 he appears to have been to some extent a maltster.

It may be remarked that John Cope and all his children wrote the name "Coope", but the original spelling was resumed by all branches of the family early in the 1800s.

His will was made July 6, 1769, was probated March 12, 1773. He owned a farm of two hundred acres, one mile northwest of the town of West Chester on which he built in 1712 a log house. He became a member of the Society of Friends, his first marriage being by Friends ceremony, the original of his marriage certificate signed by members of the Meeting, and a belt he wore, being preserved in the family.
