About his seventeenth year he came to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, settling in Sewickley township. During the active years of his life he was engaged in the nursery business. In early manhood he was a Whig, later a Know-Nothing, and finally a radical Republi-can. He was a member of the Society of Friends.
