He was born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, where he received his education in the common schools, and early in life learned the trade of a cabinetmaker, which he followed for a time. Later he became interested in the great iron industry of western Pennsylvania and was a shareholder in one of the iron mills of Pittsburgh. His latter years were spent in Clarion, Pennsylvania. He was a Jeffersonian Democrat in politics, and a member of the Presbyterian Church.
