General Notes: Husband - James G. Cook

He attended the academy and the common schools in his native town, and then entered the Washington and Jefferson College, sophomore year, from which he was graduated in the class of 1882. After leaving college he took up the study of chemistry and practical pharmacy with a view to establishing himself in the drug business. In 1886 he opened a drug store in New Alexandria. He was appointed postmaster by President Benjamin Harrison, was removed under the Democratic administration of President Cleveland, and was re-appointed by President McKinley and President Roosevelt. He was a staunch Republican, and a member of the Presbyterian church.

General Notes: Wife - Margaret Alice Shields

John Shields, ancestor of Mrs. James G. Cook, removed to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, from Adams County in 1766. He was a captain in the revolutionary army, and later rose to the rank of colonel. He was an active participant in many of the hard fought battles of that war, among which may be mentioned: Trenton and Princeton, and many minor skirmishes, and he endured the hardships of the New Jersey campaign. He was also engaged in the Indian war. When the troops were withdrawn to Kittanning during the war, there was much alarm felt among the settlers, and they held a meeting at Colonel Shields' house to consult as to the best means of protection. They decided upon the erection of a small fort near by, where they might repair for defense and protection in case of necessity. Colonel Shields died in 1821, in the eighty-second year of his age, and is buried in the cemetery at Congruity, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
