SCRUBGRASS TWP. MAN IS BURNED TO DEATH
Emlenton, April 7.-Sunday morning, David K. Mitchell, a prominent farmer of Scrubgrass township arose at about 6 o'clock to start the fire in the kitchen stove. In order that the fire might be hurried, Mr. Mitchell poured lamp oil on it, with the result that the fire was communicated to the can and an explosion followed that burned Mr. Mitchell so badly that he died twenty-four hours after, and set fire to the residence which was entirely destroyed, together with all the contents.
Mr. Mitchell was clad only in his night clothing, evidently expecting to go back to bed again until the fire was well under way. When the explosion occurred he was entirely enveloped in flame and ran from the kitchen. Mrs. Mitchell's screams brought her son, Charles, who resides only a short distance from the old home, to the assistance of his father and the burning clothing was torn from his person. Dr. C. S. Bridenbaugh was summoned quickly and every effort was made to save the life of Mr. Mitchell, but his burns were so deep that death ensued Monday morning, about twenty-four hours after the unfortunate accident.
The death of Mr. Mitchell has cast a gloom over the entire community in which he lived all of his life, being born on the farm on which his death occurred on Oct. 18, 1840. His parents were Samuel and Rachel (Kerr) Mitchell. He was twice married, his second wife, who survives him, being Rosaltha Collingwood. One son, Charles Mitchell, by a former marriage, and one sister, Mrs. Josephine McQuiston, of Montpelier, Ind., also survive.
Mr. Mitchell served his country in the Civil war, being a member of Co. G, 63d Pennsylvania Volunteers, commanded by Col. Hays. He was a member of the Scrubgrass Presbyterian church, and was honored and respected by a wide circle of friends and neighbors.
The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, services being conducted by his pastor, Rev. Witherspoon, and interment was made in the church yard nearby.
