He is the subject of a legend handed down in the family, to the effect he had been kid­napped by the Indians when a child, and kept by them until he was grown. He always loved wild life."

Between 1800 and 1810, a number of families migrated from the Orwigsburg area of Berks County, PA, to Northumberland County. These in­cluded David Ketner and his wife. The 1810 Census of West Buffalo Twp. lists him and shows 2 boys under ten; 2 boys ages 10-15, and 1 girl under 10 in the family. A nearby household is that of Christian Derr, whose daughter Elizabeth became the wife of David's son, William. By 1820 this area had become Union County, but the two families are found still living in the same township. In addition, William Ket­ner is now enumerated as being in the age 16-25 group, with his wife, and daughter under 10. His household is the same number as that of his father. Christian Derr is next to them.
