General Notes: Husband - Jonathan Colegrove

He was a native of Sterling, Windham County, Connecticut, but was chiefly reared in Griswold, Connecticut, and educated at Penfield Academy. On completing his studies he married and removed to Norwich, Chenango County, New York, where he followed agricultural pursuits and school-teaching until his removal, in 1875, to Sergeant (later Norwich) township, McKean County, Pennsylvania, and to what was later known as Colegrove, where he was engaged in farming throughout his active life. He, however, was specially employed for a considerable time in the Bingham land office. [HMEF, 427]

He was a farmer and surveyor all his life, spending the greater portion of his years in Norwich, McKean County, Pennsylvania, although for a time he lived in Norwich, New York. Being one of the first settlers of these towns he used his influence in having them named for the town in Connecticut in which he was born. He experienced a short military career during the war of 1812-1814, when he held the rank of lieutenant at Sacketts Harbor-a position he was obliged to resign because of ill health. A Whig in politics, he was one of the first county commissioners in McKean County after its organization, and served as treasurer and state representative for one term each. The postoffice and village of Colegrove were named in his honor.
