He was born on the old homestead of the pioneer Linn family, in Lurgan Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He was educated in Lurgan Township and at the age of nine years came to Southampton Township, where he also attended school. He followed farming, was very successful, owning 284 acres of land, known as one of the best farms in the county; was a Democrat and served as supervisor, and also held other township offices.
