He received his education in the Pittsburgh schools and at the academy in Philadelphia, after which he assisted his father in the grocery business for some years and then engaged in the oil business up to 1896, after which time he was engaged in contracting and constructing street railways.
Politically he was a Republican. He belonged to the Masonic fraternity.
