General Notes: Husband - Charles Lacy Cochran

He was born in Crawford Co, PA. [HVC 1879, 483]
His younger days were spent on his father's farm. At the commencement of the war of 1812-13, he was too young to participate, but he had to be the “man” for eight or ten families in his neighborhood, all the able bodied men having gone to Erie to “fight.” He had nearly all the work to do. He afterwards learned the blacksmithing trade. He came to Franklin, Venango County, in 1828, where he carried on the blacksmithing business for a number of years. In 1835, he was commissioned Coroner of Venango county. Having a taste for military affairs, he was commissioned Major of the 78th regiment of militia, in 1835; he continued to serve in this capacity until 1843, when he was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel of his regiment. He took great interest in the militia trainings of those days. The only thing that prevented him from going to the war of Mexico, was ill-health. He was anxious to go, but the surgeon would not pass him. In 1849, he resided in Sugarcreek township, (later 3rd ward of Franklin), and was elected a Justice of the Peace in 1850, which office he held until 1855, when he removed to Franklin. He held several other minor offices in the township, also taught school. In 1865, he was elected Justice of the Peace in Franklin, which office he held at the time of his death. The Venango Spectator, published in Franklin, commenting upon his death, says: “Few men were better known to the old citizens of the county than Esquire Cochran. His temperament was that of a genial kind which secures friendship and rarely makes an enemy. In all the relations of life he bore and deserved the reputation of an honest man. The latter years of his existence were clouded by the loss of two of his sons, who fell fighting for their country, during the rebellion. May he rest in peace.” [HVC 1879, 483]
