General Notes: Husband - Samuel Dale Karns

He received a public school education in Franklin, PA. At an early age he began to assist his father in the teaming business, and was afterward associated with his father and elder brother in business at Franklin, remaining in the partnership until after his father's death. Then he sold out to his brother, A. S. Karns, and turned his attention to the oil business, in which he was interested in Cranberry Township and elsewhere, in the former location operating on the old Frawley farm, his mother's property, which was her father's homestead. It was a tract of one hundred acres, in which he and his sister, Mrs. Emma J. (Karns) McMullen, had leased the oil rights. They had forty-three wells there, all producing. Mr. Karns had another interest, in the Clintonville field, which he held in association with C. E. Smith and William Beard, of Grove City, and where thirteen wells were in operation, with a good yield. In the fall of 1914 he added scientific chicken raising to his other activities, making a specialty of Barred White Leghorn stock. He devoted considerable time and thought to the study of this business, which increased steadily from the beginning under his systematic management and took an important place in his business interests.
