He immigrated to New York city in the fall of 1833. From there he went to the vicinity of Sandy Lake, Mercer county, PA, where for some years he was employed at farm labor, attending the common schools at intervals. He afterward pursued his studies in the Allegheny College at Meadville with the object of entering the teacher's profes-sion, and subsequently taught several terms in Mercer county. In the spring of 1845 he moved to Venango county and settled on a farm near Polk, but later purchased a homestead about four miles from that borough. He began life with no capital save a determination to succeed, and became one of the substantial citizens of the community. He was Republican in politics and served one term as auditor of Venango county. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church for a number of years, and with his wife belonged to the Reynolds congregation. [HVC 1890, 1022]

He was a well and favorably known citizen of his day in French Creek Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania, occupying his farm there until his death. He was known as "Yard Step" Clulow. Coming to New York City when a youth, in the fall of 1833, he proceeded to the vicinity of Sandy Lake, in Mercer County, and did farm work for some years, meanwhile availing himself of common school privileges whenever possible. He became so ambitious for an education that when able he entered Allegheny College, at Meadville, to prepare himself for teaching, which he followed several years in Mercer County. In the spring of 1845 he settled in Venango County on a farm near Polk, later purchasing the place where he made his permanent home, about four miles from that borough. He not only made a material success, but also attained a prominent position among his fellow citizens, served a term as auditor of Venango County, and was quite influential as a member of the Republican Party. For many years he belonged to the Methodist Episcopal denomination, he and his wife uniting with the Reynolds congregation. [CAB, 580]
