He was a soldier in the Union army in the Civil war.
He graduated at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1869, and went to Rock Island, Illinois, the same year where he practiced medicine for more than forty years. He held the position of surgeon of the Rock Island Arsenal Post for more than twenty years.
