He was born on the family homestead farm in Muddy Creek township, Butler County, Pennsylvania. He received a common school education, was reared a farmer, and engaged in cultivating the original homestead, consisting of 100 acres. Politically, he was a Republican, and served as a member of the school board. He was connected with the United Presbyterian church, and contributed liberally towards that denomination.
