He was born in Holland and came to New Amsterdam prior to 1650, settling at Bergen, New Jersey.

March 26, 1667, he was granted 50 acres at Pemmerpoeck (Newark Bay) in Bergen County, New Jersey. In 1697, Prop. of New Jersey granted him 160 acres on Hackensack R. In 1707 he bought 550 acres in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, but continued to reside in New Jersey.

All of his children except two sons: Jacob and Dirk, removed from New Jersey to Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
