He attended the neighborhood schools and was reared to agricultural pursuits. He gave his attention largely to dairying, keeping from eighteen to twenty cows and operating a milk route through the Seventh Ward, New Castle, Pennsylvania. For over twenty-seven years he was an elder in the Bethel United Presbyterian Church.
