He was born on the home place in Buffalo township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, where his boyhood was passed. In 1891 he opened a grocery store in Canonsburg, and carried a full line of goods. He was a Republican, and in religion was form­erly a member of the United Presbyterian Church, having later united with the Greenside Avenue Church.
