He was reared to manhood in his native county and received his education in the public schools of the township. He was engaged in farming until 1864, when he entered the employment of the Cumberland Valley Railroad Company as collector at Bridgeport, Pennsylvania, from which he was transferred in 1872 to the position of general agent at Harrisburg.
