General Notes: Husband - George Shattuck Selden

He was educated in Allegheny College, Meadville, Pennsylvania. He read law with Judge David Derrickson, of that city, and was admitted to the bar December 17, 1844. He then removed to Pittsburgh and was admitted to practice there, January 17, 1844. In 1861 he returned to Meadville, and six years later removed to Philadelphia, where he continued to follow the legal profession, being in partnership for a while with William Freame Johnson, former governor of Pennsylvania. Mr. Selden was an able lawyer; he was enterprising and industrious, and while in Pittsburgh had a large law practice. He was especially qualified in patent cases, himself being an inventor of considerable merit. In 1855 he was one of the pioneers in extracting oil from cannel-coal. Mr. Selden was a member of the Episcopal church, and was vestryman of St. John's Church for a time, and previously held that office in St. Peter's, in Pittsburgh, in 1853.

He was one of the pioneers in the extraction of oil from cannel coal, being interested in that business in 1855 at Kiskiminetas, Pennsylvania, but after establishing a profitable trade in that line he found it demolished, like those of many other oil manufacturers, by the discovery of natural petroleum in great quantities.
