General Notes: Husband - John Martin Clapp

He recruited a company for the army in 1862, and went out as captain in Colonel Chapman Biddle's regiment, the One Hundred and Twenty-First Pennsylvania Volunteers, where he won for himself a first-class record as a soldier and an able and worthy officer. He would no doubt have been promoted to higher position and rank had he not been compelled by failing health to resign and leave the service, which he did in August, 1863. He was thereafter extensively engaged in business, and proved his ability in that line by his successful management of whatever he undertook. He was a resident of Washington city in 1890.

He and his wife had four children, three of whom were still living in 1890.

He commenced business with his father at a very early age, and in 1860 purchased his father's property and continued the business in his own name. In 1862 he recruited a company for the army and went out as captain in Colonel Chapman Biddle's regiment-121st P. V. In August, 1863, he was discharged from the army on surgeon's certificate of disability, and re-turned home. Soon after his marriage he located in New Castle, PA, and was for some time in the milling business. In 1871 he went to Tidioute, PA, engaging in the production of petroleum, in which occupation he proved a success. He for some years took an active part in Free-masonry, and took all its degrees; was also a member of the G. A. R., A. O. U. W., and other societies of a similar nature. These organizations awarded him their highest honors. He contributed largely to schools, churches and charitable societies, and was highly respected by all his neighbors and acquaintances. A strictly temperate man, and a man of undoubted integrity.
