He was born on the old family homestead in Venango township, Butler County, Pennsylvania. He received a common school education, such as the schools of his period afforded. He was reared a farmer, and always resided on a portion of the old family homestead. He was a member of the Associate Presbyterian church; in politics, he was a Democrat, and held the office of justice of the peace for fourteen years.
