General Notes: Husband - Capt. James Adams

In the list of the officers of the Cumberland county militia who were in active service in the campaign of 1776, we find in Vol. 14, Second Series of Pennsylvania Archives, p. 372, that James Adams appears as captain of the Fourth Company of the Fifth Battalion of the Cumberland County Militia. In Vol. II, p. 90, of "Colonial Records," we find the following minute, dated January 15, 1777: "Captain Kickham was directed to pay Captain James Adams One hundred and two pounds, 5 shillings, one penny, for expenses attending the marching of his company from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania."

He married and they removed to the Kishacoquillas Valley, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, where they made their home, and became the parents of a family of thirteen children who later in life removed to various parts of the state. The father and his eldest sons served in the Revolutionary war in the commands of Generals Wayne and Mifflin, and the father was also a captain of Huntingdon County regulars in the War of 1812. He was a prominent man in his home community and represented it in the State Legislature for a number of years.
