General Notes: Husband - James Adams, Sr.

The first settler on the site of Utica, Venango County, Pennsylvania, he located there about 1795.
He built the first woolen mill in the county, as well as the first carding machine. His grist and saw-mill, too, were among the first. His children were twelve in number, of whom eight were still living in 1879.
The borough of Utica is situated on French creek, part in Frenchcreek, and part in Canal township. James Adams was about the first settler. He came in 1804, built the first woolen factory in the county, and also built a grist mill in 1805 or 1806. The Adamses were the sole proprietors until 1830, when A. W. Raymond bought the land, and in 1832 or 1833, laid out the town. He intended to call it Troy, after his old home in New York, but finding that there was a postoffice by that name in the state, he concluded to name it Utica. [HVC 1879, 496]
He died in 1853 at age eighty-three. [HVC 1879, 492]

General Notes: Wife - Rachel Black

She died in 1868 at age eighty-three. [HVC 1879, 492]
