He attended the public schools until sixteen years of age, was then for two years at the Transfer high school, and then for nine terms taught in the schools of Otter Creek and Pymatuning Townships, Mercer County, PA. From that time on he was engaged in agricultural pursuits, farming for thirteen years near Kidd Mills and later conducting the homestead of one hundred and twenty-five acres. He was identified with the Democratic Party until 1901, when he changed his allegiance to Socialism, and was a candidate in 1908 on that ticket for the office of county commissioner. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
