General Notes: Husband - Goodman Young Coulter Chess

He was educated in the public schools in the vicinity of his home, and at a suitable age became identified with the occupations of farming and gardening, which he followed until some years prior to his death, when he retired to his home in Sterrett place, overlooking Crafton. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 he enlisted in Company A, Ninth Regiment Pennsylvania Reserves, and was in service two years and ten months as a private. At the close of the war he returned to his farm of sixty-two acres which had come to him as a part of the old Chess estate. He took an active part in public affairs, as a supporter of the Republican party, and served as a member of the school board for some time. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church.
