General Notes: Husband - Thomas L. Cheney

He started in life with a very limited education, but being a man of will and energy, he always grasped every opportunity which was for his good, made the most of it, and has been very successful in his business life. After leaving school he assisted his father for several years in the farming and lumbering business; he then worked as sawyer, for three years, for Benjamin McGee, and later on went to work on the farm of John Grimm. He then bought a farm of 100 acres of his uncle, and started farming, lumbering and jobbing in barrel staves, hauling his goods to Pleasantville and Titusville, and selling them in the oil fields. Then for four years he worked in Oil Creek as driller and tool dresser, and at the end of that period he began contracting walking beams for rigs.
For two years, he carried on farming, and later added a shingle mill, and board mill, conducting them for four years, when he sold the entire plant to Alcorn & Geer, and leased the oil property to the National Oil Company of Titusville. They drilled for oil on the place, and were successful. He worked for the oil company eight years, when he resigned, and began attending to his farm. There were twenty-five wells on his property, seventeen of which continued to producing oil. His farm, which was one of the nicest and best kept in the township, did credit to Mr. Cheney's taste, for it was much admired, and on it stood one of the prettiest little houses in the township,-the interior being excellently arranged. Mr. Cheney raised general farm truck, stock, and had a large number of bee hives,-the bees making 400 pounds of honey in early years. He had cleared most of the farm, planted an orchard, and erected splendid barns. In politics, he was a Democrat and served as supervisor. He was a member of the Queen City Lodge, I. O. O. F., No. 304.
