He took a course in Allegheny College at Meadville, Pennsylvania, and in 1849 graduated at the Cleveland Medical College. After graduation he located at Greenfield (now Coal Centre), Washington County, Pennsylvania, later moving to a farm in East Pike Run Township, and practiced his profession with great success for nearly fifty years. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and a Mason.
