General Notes: Husband - John Ambrose McBride

He attended school until he was sixteen years of age; for the succeeding four years assisted his father on the home farm; then went to Sheakleyville to learn the blacksmith's trade and, after he had mastered it, returned to his native locality (November 1, 1883,) for the purpose of occupying the farm which he had purchased of Samuel Gardner, of Jamestown. For the forty and three-quarters acres which became known as "Sunnyside" he then paid only $850. It adjoined the old Pike Road, which was endeared to him by so many family and boyhood associations, and was also near the famous Couse homestead, so noted in Abolition days as a popular station for the negroes who were being "put through'' on the Underground Railway. In politics he was a Democrat and gave service as a member of the school board. [HMC 1909, 1015]

General Notes: Wife - Mary Ellen Cathcart

She obtained a thorough district school education by her sixteenth year, and, after attending the Savannah (IL) High School for a time, taught for five terms in Carroll County, IL. She returned with her parents to Mercer County, PA, and after her marriage they were members of her household until their death. Although Mrs. McBride had no children by marriage, at the death of her elder sister, Judith, she took the orphans into her home-an infant of eight weeks and a child of eight years-and educated and reared them until their marriage.
