He was educated at the West Virginia University, Morgantown, West Virginia, receiving his degree in 1901. He then for some six months held a position as traveling salesman, and in 1902 engaged in the laundry business. For two years he was connected with different establishments, and in July, 1904, purchased a business which he then conducted. His establishment bore the name of the White Swan Laundry.
He was a Roman Catholic and his wife was a Presbyterian.
