While teaching school in Hayfield Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, he became acquainted with his future wife. After living on a farm for a few years after their marriage, he and his wife moved to Meadville, Pennsylvania, in 1848, where he was elected Sheriff of
Crawford County. At the expiration of his term of office he carried on a general merchandising store for about sixteen years at Conneautville. In 1871 Mr. Adams was elected Jury Commissioner, and was then re-elected, his second term expired in fall of 1872. They then lived for some years on a farm near Meadville, and in 1877 went to Sterling, Rice County, Kansas.
