General Notes: Husband - Oakley H. Carter

He and his wife had been special friends in high school. Then he went to Canada to work on grain elevators with a brother, then enlisted in the U.S. Army when World War I began. Their paths crossed briefly after he returned from the Army, and then again in Scoby, Montana, in 1925, where she was teaching school. They were married in Forest City, Minnesota, went to Montebello, California, on their wedding trip, and settled there. She attended UCLA to earn her California credentials, and then they moved to Long Beach, where he worked in the oil fields. She taught about 15 years in the Los Angeles City schools, or until 1945, when she had to retire on disability because of the loss of sight in one eye. The family had moved back to Montebello in 1936, where they raised oranges, chickens and rabbits. Industry gradually encroached, and they moved to a city lot in 1967. He had gone to work building Liberty ships during World War II, and after a recovery from a serious injury, worked as a guard at a near-by Air Force supply base. Later, he returned to his first trade: carpentry and worked at various jobs building houses, and also worked on several freeways.
