His early education was acquired in the public schools and he then attended Waynesburg College, which conferred upon him the degree of Bachelor of Arts. He subsequently entered the medical department of the Western University of Pennsylvania, from which he was graduated with honor. Shortly after graduation he decided upon Homewood, Pennsylvania, as his future place of residence, and established himself there as a general medical practitioner in 1897.
