General Notes: Husband - John M. McIlvaine

His boyhood was passed in farm work, and in attending the schools of the township and of Hickory village. He came to Mt. Pleasant township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, at the age of fourteen years.

He was born on Pigeon Creek, Somerset Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, about two miles from Bentleyville, and was baptized there by Dr. John McMillen, the first minister of Washington County. He attended school both in Somerset and Mt. Pleasant Townships, these being mostly subscription schools. He remained at home helping his father, accompanying him when he moved to the different farms and finally becoming the owner of one, which he rented for a time before purchasing it. For many years he was a very active general farmer and dealer in sheep and wool and was considered an excellent judge of both land and cattle. [TCHWWC, 989]
