He was of Scotch ancestry.
He spent his early life in his native land, living there until after his marriage. Subsequently, accompanied by his wife and their only son, William, he emigrated to America, and for awhile lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Coming from there to Mercer County in pioneer days, he bought a tract of land in Springfield Township, in the extreme southern part.

He migrated to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, in 1795, and in 1797 came to Mercer County, settling on a farm in Springfield Township.
