General Notes: Husband - Rev. Thomas Patterson Proudfit

He was graduated from Madison College in September, 1859. He had earned money for college expenses by teaching country schools. He studied theology in Allegheny Seminary, and was licensed April 15, 1862, by the Muskingum Presbytery of the United Presbyterian Church. He was ordained and sent as a home missionary to the Territory of Nebraska in 1863. He and his wife went by train from New Concord to St. Joseph, Missouri; thence by boat to Nebraska City; by hack to Omaha; by stage to Fremont, and on a wagon load of lumber to North Bend. The journey required nine days of actual travel. His work there involved long horseback rides; two appointments for the same day would sometimes be 15 or 20 miles apart. Three years of this life began to tell on his health, and he left the frontier. He preached for four years at Bethel, Illinois, eleven at Union, Illinois, and twelve at Taylorstown, Pennsylvania.
