He was sixteen years old when he began an apprenticeship in his uncle's brewery. He became interested in the oil fields of Venango and Warren counties as a pumper in 1868 and three years later returned to Chicora and began operations as an oil operator. In 1876 and 1877 he became identified with the firm of Hoch Brothers and they erected the Central Hotel building. In 1883 they embarked in the hardware business and became one of the leading firms of the county, dealing in hardware and oil well supplies.
Mr. Hoch was one of the organizers of the Citizens Light & Fuel Company, which was later known as the Prospect Oil & Gas Company, of which he was director and secretary. He was also a director of the Guaranty Trust Company of Butler and was one of the largest land owners in the county, and also owned large tracts of land in Texas. Mr. Hoch was one of the organizers of the Producers Oil Company, Ltd., which was later sold to the Ohio City Gas Company.
He took an active part in the political affairs of Chicora and served as burgess and president of the borough council. He was a Republican, a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and was affiliated with the following branches of the Masonic order: Argyle Lodge No. 540; Butler Chapter R. A. M. No. 273; Tankard Commandery K. T. Pittsburgh; Pennsylvania Consistory, 32nd degree, Pittsburgh; Syria Temple, Pittsburgh; and Syria Caravan No. 14, Butler.
