General Notes: Husband - Robert Guffey

He bought a farm in Sewickley township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, lying about one and a half miles from Sutersville, containing one hundred acres that he cleared and brought under cultivation. He was a Democrat in politics, and both he and his wife were members of the Presbyterian church.

The first coal mines in western Pennsylvania were opened up by the Guffeys on their own land. The first coal sent down the Ohio river from Pittsburgh was shipped in 1817. Robert Guffey, a son of “Squire John,” often related that in the year 1808, being then a lad of ten years, he held a copper lamp to give light to the coal diggers. The lamp was a great contrivance, oblong in shape, and contained lumps of tallow and wick which was drawn out through a spout and lighted.
