He was one of the early settlers of Beaver County, Pennsylvania. In his early years he was a tanner by trade and lived in Rochester, Beaver County, but he later became a farmer, and continued in this occupation until the year of his death. He was a Republican in politics, a man who took an alert interest in the questions of the day, especially in the conduct of local affairs. He and his family were members of the United Presbyterian Church.
